BB&T Helps Equip Special Olympics West Virginia Athletes
09/23/2010

BB&T has teamed with Special Olympics West Virginia to provide sports equipment for Special Olympics athletes to use during their training and various competitions.  The company donated new volleyballs, basketballs, footballs, bocce sets,  stopwatches, and much more.

“We are very grateful that BB&T is providing our Special Olympics athletes with top-quality sports equipment,” said John Corbett, CEO, Special Olympics West Virginia.  “This new equipment will greatly enhance our training and competitions and provide our athletes with opportunities to improve their sports skills and find lasting joy through their participation.  We are touched that BB&T and its employees want to make a difference in the lives of our Special Olympics athletes.  This donation will have an impact on many and will truly help our organization.”

BB&T employees presented the sports equipment during a luncheon at one the company's Charleston locations.  “We wanted to work with Special Olympics West Virginia because of the great work they do in the state,” said Chiquitta Walker of BB&T.  “We are proud to team up with the organization and help in any way we can.”

The donation was a result of the company's Lighthouse Project where teams of BB&T employees select non-profit agencies to assist.  BB&T hopes that others join with its employees in volunteering their time and supporting organizations such as Special Olympics West Virginia.

Jimmy Ferrell, a Special Olympics athlete from Kanawha County, accepted the donation on behalf of his fellow athletes from across the state and shared his appreciation during the luncheon.  “I am so happy that BB&T is helping us.  It's very kind of BB&T to give us all of this new sports stuff.”
