In recognition of the more than 525 athletes competing at the 2011 Special Olympics West Virginia Fall Games, the UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, has provided a grant of $23,500. The grant will help cover such costs as housing, medals, use of competition facilities, equipment, clothing, travel and more. “We are very grateful for the generous support from UPS,” said Linda Quinn, SOWV Director of Field Services. “The grant will help us considerably with our expenses. Furthermore, we are so pleased that the local UPS staff has a strong tradition of community service and has partnered with us by being dedicated volunteers at our various state events.”
Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Georgia, the UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, the foundation has identified the following focus area for giving: nonprofit effectiveness, economic and global literacy, encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability. In 2010, the UPS Foundation distributed more than $44.6 million worldwide through grants that benefits organizations or programs such as Special Olympics West Virginia and provide support for building stronger communities.
“The UPS Foundation is committed to funding impactful programs that make a meaningful difference in our communities – so we are proud to support Special Olympics West Virginia's efforts to provide sports training and athletic competition for persons with intellectual disabilities, to meet their goal to provide opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships through their experiences as an athlete and in their communities as productive, contributing citizens,” said Ken Sternad, President of the UPS Foundation. |
