photoOur two Special Olympics West Virginia athletes who were members of the USA Team returned home today from their amazing journey to the World Games in Los Angeles.

Chelsea Lansberry and Brandon Wilt, both of Preston County, brought with them not only fond memories of a once-in-a-lifetime experience but also medals and ribbons that they earned in their competitions against Special Olympics athletes from around the world.

Chelsea won a Gold Medal in Team Bowling, a Silver Medal in Bowling Doubles, and a ribbon in Bowling Singles.  Brandon won 6th place ribbons in his three track and field events that included shot put and relay races.

We are very proud of what our West Virginia athletes accomplished at World Games, and inspired by their effort and determination to do their personal best.

WVU President E. Gordon Gee recently stopped in Harrison County during his travels across the state.  While there, President Gee and some WVU student athletes visited with Special Olympics athletes, coaches and families from Harrison County.

President Gee noted is his blog, “We topped off an eventful day with some exceptional people at a Special Olympics picnic at Veterans Memorial Park.  The Special Olympics is a special program that we, at WVU, wholeheartedly support.  It provides folks an outlet for physical fitness and, best of all, lifelong friendships.”

The Jefferson Awards highlight individuals who are selfless and that's exactly what John Stemple's talent is. Stemple works very close with special needs children in the community. His dedication to organizations such as Monongalia County Special Olympics and Stepping Stones -- a non-profit organization providing year-round recreation to children with disabilities has allowed him to be honored as a Jefferson Award winner.
