Special Olympics West Virginia will be conducting four Polar Plunges in 2013.  Pick the one nearest you, or dare yourself to participate in all four and be among the truly “elite plungers.”  Regardless, you will enjoy the thrill and excitement that surround each of the events.

Each participant must raise a minimum of $50 for the privilege to plunge, and the more money participants raise the more prizes they receive.  The money generated from the Polar Plunges enables thousands of Special Olympics West Virginia athletes to have opportunities for year-round sports training and competition that results in lasting joy and happiness.

Our 2013 Winter Games will be January 24-25 at Canaan Valley Resort and White Grass Ski Touring Center.  The Games will offer Special Olympics athletes the opportunity to demonstrate their skills as they compete in alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.  Alpine skiers and snowboarders will conquer the mountain while competing in the giant slalom and downhill races.  Athletes competing in cross country skiing and snowshoeing will race in events that range from 50 meters to 3 kilometers.

As part of Finish Line's commitment to celebrating the everyday achievements of athletes everywhere, one of the leading athletic retailers has designated Special Olympics as one of the beneficiaries of the Finish Line Youth Foundation's in-store and online holiday customer and employee donation program.  The campaign is being held in Finish Line stores nationwide from November 2 – December 31, 2012.

Finish Line's Holiday Consumer Donation Campaign is one key component of an exciting multi-year sponsorship with Special Olympics.  In addition to this Consumer Donation Campaign, Finish Line will support Special Olympics through diverse opportunities including sales of co-branded merchandise online and in Finish Line's more than 650 stores, employee volunteer opportunities in local communities, and national sponsorship of Special Olympics TRAIN – a sports assessment and nutrition education program designed to help Special Olympics athletes stay active, stay healthy, and achieve their personal best.

“This partnership is a great fit for us,” said Dr. Timothy P. Shriver, Chairman and CEO of Special Olympics International.  “We are a sports organization and Finish Line is a great sports brand with a passion to celebrate the achievements of athletes everywhere.  Finish Line's commitment to supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities will be a tremendous asset as we continue to work to promote acceptance and inclusion for all people.”

More than 700 Special Olympics West Virginia athletes and volunteer coaches will be in Parkersburg November 9-11 for the 2012 Fall Games.  The athletes, representing 30 counties, will showcase their courage and abilities as they compete in bowling, volleyball, flag football, and football skills.

To make sure these athletes have a wonderful experience, more than 250 volunteers are needed throughout the weekend.  Parkersburg South High School will host the volleyball and football competitions, with bowling taking place at Pike Street Lanes.  If you would like to volunteer for all or a portion of the event, please fill out the Volunteer Application Form and Fall Games Schedule through the link below or call the Special Olympics West Virginia office.

Fans from the community are welcome to attend Fall Games and inspire the athletes to do their best.

The athletes' participation in Fall Games is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Grainger, Wendy's, Foodland, and the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts.
